#identity card

RIMSA P. LONGONI SRL is a company from Seregno that was founded in 1936 as a laboratory, thanks to inventor Palmino Longoni, and began producing pantograph lamps. Starting in the 1980s, it began specialising in the production of surgical lamps (medical devices that generate a beam of light capable of neutralising shadows) with a continuous development that led to the patenting in 2002 of the world’s first LED lamp and the resolution, in 2017, of the important problem of glare in the operating theatre (a problem that accounts for around 13% in the unsuccessful outcome of surgery). We had a chat with Glauco Longoni about what challenges await RIMSA P. LONGONI SRL for the future and what it means to be a sustainable company.

#Looking Ahead What are the challenges for the future and how do you intend to expand the market?

Our main focus is on developing and maintaining the quality of medical devices, with continuous research. We want to reach new markets soon, with a more punctual presence (this adjective does not make much sense here), this challenge is very exciting. We want to achieve a more direct internationalisation, whereas now we rely more on the capabilities of local distributors, with the aim of starting to participate in specifications with public administrations in other countries as well, to manage the whole process of installation and maintenance in the post-purchase phase. We are certainly looking to expand the boundaries of production in other articles in the sector such as frontal light helmets for surgery, but we are also aiming for the future production of products for home and office use. We are trying to ‘expand the boundaries of light’ in line with the production requirements of a changing and evolving world.

#character what distinguishes you from other companies in the industry?

The mentality and the way the work is done. You don’t have to look at the impact left from a competitive perspective to praise yourself; however, it is the choice of a method and mentality, that of the people who drive the company, that makes the difference. It is the right mentality that motivates one to continue the research process, started by my great-grandfather Palmino (with 123 patents to his name), and the maintenance of product quality.

#Sustainability How does RIMSA P. LONGONI SRL on sustainability and what does it mean for you?

The focus on sustainability is present within our articles of association. We are in the process of obtaining B Corp certification, we are ISO 14001 certified, which certifies our ability to comply with applicable laws to limit pollution, and we are also a Benefit company with a common benefit in mind. In fact, sustainability should not be limited to ecological discourse but extended to all 5 welfare pillars: governance, workers, ecology, community and suppliers. One example is the recent opening of our new factory in Cabiate on 13 September, where we decided to purchase an abandoned warehouse, on the border between two municipalities, redeveloping a disused area and revitalising an existing building instead of building a new one. In our opinion, this is the way to be sustainable. We are committed because we believe in our effort, which is part of the collective both inside and outside the company.
