A new way to experience healthcare

The University Hospital of Cagliari has launched Italy’s first Meta-Hospital: an immersive virtual environment that allows citizens to access a wide range of healthcare services from the comfort of their own homes no need to visit a hospital in person. This groundbreaking initiative marks a major step toward a more accessible and technologically advanced healthcare system, leveraging the Metaverse to enhance patient experience and optimize healthcare resources.

Healthcare, anytime: a 24/7 digital hospital

The Meta-Hospital is available 24/7 via computer, tablet, or virtual reality headset. This innovation lets users manage their healthcare needs at any time, overcoming the limitations of traditional hospital hours. On the ground floor of the virtual facility, users can interact with an intuitive interface to:

  • Book medical appointments
  • Pay healthcare fees
  • Schedule medication pick-ups
  • Access their Electronic Health Record
  • Check ER waiting times

Upstairs, users can connect with Public Relations staff to get detailed information and support regarding their healthcare journey.

The digital future of healthcare

Digital technology is rapidly transforming the healthcare sector, and the Cagliari Meta-Hospital is a clear example of this shift. Citizens can access services through VR headsets or more commonly via PC, tablet, or smartphone—ensuring inclusive access regardless of tech skill level.

AI-powered virtual assistance

One of the Meta-Hospital’s most innovative features is Anna, a 3D virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence. Anna is available 24/7 to help patients book appointments, manage health documents, and navigate the virtual platform. This AI-driven support system increases efficiency and ensures continuous assistance without the need to contact human staff for routine inquiries.

New frontiers: palliative care and medical training

The AOU of Cagliari is already working on expanding the Meta-Hospital with two additional floors that will host:

  • Palliative care and pain therapy services, offering support to critically ill patients at home
  • Areas dedicated to training for medical professionals and the public, with interactive spaces to improve health literacy and professional development

A strategic investment in the future

This project required significant financial and technological investment. The AOU of Cagliari aims to expand this model nationally, building a network of virtual hospitals across Italy.

The role ofiInstitutions and digital innovation

The Meta-Hospital’s official launch was attended by key institutional representatives, including PA Social, Fondazione Italia Digitale, Federsanità, Fiaso, and the University of Cagliari. Chiara Seazzu, General Director of AOU Cagliari, emphasized the need for continuous innovation in healthcare to meet evolving patient needs. Elisabetta Gola, Vice-Rector for Communication at the University of Cagliari, highlighted how the Metaverse represents a new frontier in digital communication and service accessibility.

A model for the future of healthcare

Cagliari’s Meta-Hospital is more than a tech experiment—it’s a scalable model that could reshape healthcare nationwide. Embracing digital solutions like this is key to breaking down geographical barriers, reducing wait times, and improving system efficiency.

With strong institutional backing and growing interest in public sector digitalization, the future of healthcare looks increasingly connected, inclusive, and innovative.
