Energy transition Sardinia has officially begun. The Dpcm (Prime Ministerial Decree) that marks the definitive path for the island’s coal phase-out has been signed. The measure initiates the decarbonization process through strategic investments in renewables, storage systems, and new infrastructure, aligning Sardinia with the objectives of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).
The decree defines the priority projects to overcome the dependency on coal power plants, such as those in the Sulcis region, and to fully integrate the island into the national energy system, while ensuring security and sustainability.
Key Measures of the Decree for Sardinia’s Energy Transformation
The plan is based on three strategic pillars, each designed to solve one of Sardinia’s historical energy challenges.
1. Goal: Renewables – More Wind, Solar, and Storage Systems
The core of the strategy is a strong acceleration in clean energy production. The decree aims to:
- Increase production capacity from renewable sources, primarily wind and solar power.
- Install energy storage systems (large-scale batteries) to store excess energy produced and guarantee a constant supply, overcoming the intermittency of green sources.
2. Integration and Security: The Crucial Role of the Tyrrhenian Link
To overcome the island’s electrical isolation, the key infrastructure is the Tyrrhenian Link. This project by Terna consists of a double submarine power line that will connect Sardinia to Sicily and the national grid. Its main advantages are:
- Increasing the security and stability of the Sardinian grid.
- Allowing Sardinia to export surplus renewable energy.
- Transforming the island into a strategic hub for green energy in the Mediterranean.
3. A Stable Transition: The “Virtual Pipeline” with LNG and FSRUs To ensure a reliable energy source during the transition from coal, the decree introduces a flexible solution based on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). In the absence of a physical gas pipeline, the gas will arrive by sea to:
- FSRUs (Floating Storage and Regasification Units): specialized vessels that convert LNG back to its gaseous state to be fed into local networks.
This “virtual pipeline” system guarantees operational continuity for industries and gas prices in line with the national market for all Sardinian consumers.
In summary, the new decree not only schedules the end of coal but also defines an energy development model for Sardinia based on sustainability, innovation, and integration, paving the way for a future of greater energy efficiency and autonomy.
